Biodiversity is something that truly makes the world go around. The word diverse is even within the term. Biodiversity means the variety and variability of biology and geography; living organisms and plant life. It is the ecological complex that forms a foundation for how successful an ecosystem is linked to humanity and well- being. In regards to the biodiversity in Brazil, “Brazil is home to one of the richest biodiversity’s in the world,” (UNESCO, 2016). Brazil is so rich in agriculture and species that they are home to one of the largest bloodlines to a sustainable world, not only in South America but also in other various countries. Taking that Brazil is home to the vast Amazon Rainforest; they are accountable for being one of the largest biodiverse hotspots. The “wildlife in Brazil accounts for one tenth of all species in the world due to the Amazon Rainforest,” (UNESCO, 2016). Specifically, the plant diversity is of great wealth. “However, its impact to guarantee the well-being and health of the people will only be achieved through knowledge of the mutual interactions of organisms,” (Gottlieb, 1996). Although Brazil is rich in biodiversity, the country is quite the opposite when it comes to culture. The difference is, is that “Brazilian culture was never monolithic. Since the sixteenth century, it has been an amalgamation of traditional Iberian, indigenous, and African values, as well as more recent Western values, developed in northern Europe and the United States, such as equality, democracy, efficiency, and individual rights,” (Coutsoukis, 2004). There are conflicts between origin and culture and practices such as, open conflict between the Mediterranean origin and the African origin. In regards to the cultural diversity though, there is a difference in unity. “Brazil is remarkable for the way in which there is unity in cultural diversity,” (Coutsoukis, 2004). Biodiversity and cultural diversity intimately relate. A specific human population and the sustainability of the environment and ecosystem and the land that a culture occupies goes hand in hand. The issues of biodiversity in Brazil correlate to how cultural identity is threatened. Several native descendants that are uncontacted are still living in the vast Amazon to this very day. This cultural aspect intimately relates to biodiversity because these specific peoples are still residing in their original area’s and practicing their ancestry ways because to them, their land is their religion; the Amazon is what they believe is their “home” and if they were to evolve, their culture would disappear. Today Brazil is impacted by biodiversity in the way that the native peoples significantly endow in participating in sustaining the country and even various other countries such as, “medicines used by pharmaceutical corporations and material development,” (TIES, 1990-2016). Taking that Brazil has major biomes, natural environments and marine landscapes feature ecotourism opportunities. “Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and is full of inspiring natural and cultural beauty,” (TIES, 1990-2016). Brazil is such a hotspot for tourism because their countries natural beauty is fully equipped with the world’s largest rain forest, the world’s largest wetlands and one of the world’s largest ecosystems. Tourism is such a staple to the countries sustainability not only in regards to the environment and people but also to the economy. This is because Brazil’s economy is greatly affected if tourists do not enter their economy. Without biodiversity and culture diversity Brazil would not because to sustain not only their environment but also their economy. Biodiversity intimately connects to the idea of cultural diversity. Without biodiversity, Brazil would not be known to have one of the largest sustainable environment and without cultural diversity, Brazil would not be able to contribute to the sustainability of their population in health, economy and everyday life. There are great connections between cultural identity and the biodiversity of the plants and animals that reside in this South American country. This chart compares how bio diverse each country is. In the chart you can see that Brazil is one of the most sustainable countries due to biodiversity. http://www.premiumbeautynews.com/IMG/jpg/600-figure2-2.jpg In this chart the correlation between biodiversity and culture diversity is shown. It shows how the two relate to each other to produce a sustainable environment. http://geog030.dutton.psu.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/4463/2016/04/Chart.jpg Citations: EcoDestinations - Brazil.
